MHCC District board to consider
increasing fees for some classes

MHCC President John Sygielski is expected to propose raises in class fees at Wednesday’s district board meeting.

According to Vice President of College Advancement Cassie McVeety, distance learning course fees are slated for increases.

“Due to how popular distance learning has become, costs for running the programs has increased, so I know Dr. Ski has been looking at new ways to fund it,” said McVeety. McVeety said she didn’t know of any other increases.

The Associated Student Government Finance Council had proposed a 50 cent increase per credit hour, and the Senate passed it Wednesday of last week.

Asked why tuition increases aren’t being proposed, McVeety said, “Fees are more applied to costs associated with programs.  Tuition would affect every student, whereas the students that decide to do more expensive programs would have to pay more based on lab or technology costs.”

Also on the agenda for the 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting is a budget update from Sygielski and JoAnn Zahn, vice president of administrative services.

“Because measures 66 and 67 passed,” McVeety said, “we’re not looking at additional revenue generation or expense cuts to the tune of $1.2 million to $2.8 million.  The PERS (Public Employees Retirement System) is a potential source, a reserve put in place in the event of future problems that need funding.  We won’t know how much we might need until June.  What Dr. Ski will be discussing has to do with our situation in June.  Just because we’re looking at using some of it doesn’t mean we’ll use all or any of it.”

Neither Zahn nor Sygielski were available for comment.

At the January board meeting, board member Duke Shepard suggested the college look at the possible exposure of BPA at the Child Development Center, perhaps as soon as the February board meeting.  BPA is a chemical found in some plastics that exposes people to increased levels of estrogen when the plastics are heated.

Shepard said this is especially harmful to children in their developmental stages.  However nothing is on the board agenda in regards to a discussion about BPA.

Where are the fees going?
The fee increases won't improve anything for the students. Our fees go up, but nothing is replaced in our classroom, nothing is fixed on the building, and nothing is done to improve the college.
