Meet Mt. Hood Baseball Team Captain Isaiah Chacon

Coming off a double header sweep of Chemeketa Community College on April 24, The Advocate caught up with the Saints’ baseball team captain, sophomore catcher/outfielder Isaiah Chacon, who wears No. 8.

We learned about his early life in Texas, what the Mt. Hood team means to him, and more.

In 32 games played this season as of April 30, Chacon is batting .262 with 115 at-bats – but got hot in April, batting .326 for the month. That’s much improved from the .190 batting average he had in 79 at-bats for the Saints during his freshman year, in 2023.

Hailing from Katy, Texas, Chacon came to MHCC from Paetow High School. He got into baseball through his family, playing baseball year-round there. The move to Gresham from Texas may seem unusual, but he said he chose to come play for the Saints because his uncle, Ezra had also played catcher at Mt. Hood and gave him an understanding of both the school and team culture.

Chacon said he didn’t experience much of a culture shock when moving from the Lone Star State to Oregon – except the atmosphere for the games is very different from that in his hometown.

He said his first year in college took some getting used to, but his potential shined through to Saints Coach Korey Kier. Once Kier appointed him to fill the shoes of his predecessor as the team captain for his sophomore year, he has focused on boosting teammate relationships, coordinating practice, and making sure the entire team is on the same page on what the objective is.

Chacon is hoping to take his own baseball game to the next level; just where he doesn’t yet know.

As for Mt. Hood, he expressed a positive outlook on his final season with the Saints: “The rest of the 2024 season is going to be fun and a lot can happen with the two weeks we have left.”

At 12-22 overall and 10-18 in Northwest Athletic Conference play, Mt. Hood has four more double headers remaining. That includes two matchups at home, against Southwestern Oregon Community College on Saturday (May 4) and Umpqua Community College on Thursday, May 9.
