The Pilgrimage to MHCC

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the number of international students pursuing higher education in the United States continues to grow.

Mt. Hood Community College is one such institution that welcomes students from diverse cultural backgrounds – and here’s a closer look at the journey of an international student at MHCC and the challenges, opportunities, and experiences that shape their academic and personal growth.

THE DECISION

The decision to study abroad can be scary for many international students. The thoughts of leaving behind family, friends, and familiar territory can be overwhelming. Nevertheless, the prospect of accessing quality education, and new opportunities motivates many of them to take that bold step.

Sometimes, one begins to wonder if studying abroad is the right decision to make. That inner voice after making a life-changing is something is common to many of us. One of the international students here told me she had never traveled outside her home country before coming to the U.S. and so coming to Mt Hood, in a new country and continent, was a big deal for her.

GETTING TO KNOW MHCC

MHCC’s international student population today spans over 20 countries, with a significant number coming from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Among other things, the college makes transition easier for international students. Upon arrival, students are welcomed by Mt. Hood’s International Student Services team, which provides support with orientation and registration.

This portion of the journey is always a great experience for most of the students. The campus tour, social gatherings and the International Students Club help them get better acquainted with the campus and people.

The campus maps at nearly every corner also make it easier for first-timers to navigate the buildings and explore the campus. This is one thing I found fascinating.

CULTURAL ADAPTATION

Adjusting to American culture and academic expectations can be a significant challenge for many international students. From navigating unfamiliar food options to understanding local customs, everyday experiences can be both exciting and daunting. MHCC gives students access to various resources to ease cultural adaptation, including language support services, cultural orientation programs, and social events.

The college’s diverse student body also provides opportunities for international students to connect with other students from similar backgrounds.

ACADEMIC RIGOR AND SUPPORT

MHCC’s academic programs are designed to provide international students with a solid foundation for success. From associate’s degrees to transfer programs, the college offers a range of options to suit diverse academic goals. International students often face unique academic challenges, such as adapting to new teaching styles and meeting English language proficiency requirements. MHCC’s faculty and staff are committed to providing support, including academic advising, tutoring, and language support services.

These support services and resources help students succeed both in the classroom and outside of it. The tutoring service, for instance, which offers one-on-one tutoring, helps students to understand complex assignments and concepts and aids them in exam preparation. There are available academic advisors that guide students in choosing courses, setting academic goals and study plans.

These are just a few out of many available resources designed for students to succeed in all situations.

CAMPUS LIFE AND  COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

MHCC’s campus offers a vibrant and inclusive environment, with clubs, organizations, and events catering to diverse interests. International students are encouraged to participate in campus life, develop leadership skills, and build relationships with other students. The college’s location in Gresham also provides opportunities for international students to engage with the local community. From volunteering at local nonprofits to participating in cultural events, students can develop valuable skills and connections while exploring the Pacific Northwest.

FINAL NOTES

The journey of an international student at MHCC can be a transformative experience of academic rigor, cultural immersion, and personal growth. While there are a few challenges, the college’s supportive community, academic resources, and campus life opportunities help students to succeed.

As international students handle the difficulties of studying abroad, they develop valuable skills, perceptions, and acquaintances that will be of great value in their future endeavors. Mt. Hood’s commitment to building a global community on campus ensures that international students feel accepted, supported, and empowered to succeed.
