The Mt. Hood Saints competed twice during April in their first track and field action after a year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

MHCC’s first meet took place at Clackamas Community College on April 2, with a head-to-head matchup with the Cougars.

Among standout performances for the Saints men, freshman Tyrus Love won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.70 seconds, and also won the long jump with a 20 foot, 7 inch mark. In the shot put and hammer throw, freshman Daniel Coppedge hit marks of 39 feet, 10 inches and 153 feet, 2 inches, respectively, taking first in the hammer throw, and also finished second it the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 9.5 inches. Sophomore Matthew Muller was victorious with a javelin toss of 148 feet, 5 inches and finished second behind Coppedge in the hammer throw, at 107 feet even.

On the women’s side, freshman Josie Phelps won the shot put with a mark of 32 feet, 10.25 inches, while fellow Saints freshman Makaelyn Jennings placed second. In addition, Phelps won the discus competition at 107 feet, 1 inch, and took second in the hammer throw at 106 feet, 10 inches. In the javelin contest, Jennings won with a distance of 126 feet, 4 inches, while freshman Nicole Manning won third with a distance of 110 feet, 6 inches.

Souvanny Carpenter won the women’s 400-meter run with a time of 1:06.82 minutes, just ahead of fellow Saints freshman MacKenzie Heideman, at 1:22.48. Carpenter also finished second in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:20.35, with freshman Alyssa Showalter placing third (6:01.45)

and Heideman fourth (6:02.84). Meantime, freshman Madisyn Nguyen was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.57.

“I was very happy and impressed by the performance the athletes gave,” said MHCC Head Coach Fernando Fantroy.

The following weekend, the Saints hosted a meet on April 10, competing with both Clackamas and Chemeketa.

Highlights among the women’s events included sophomore Ujunwa Nwokoma winning in the 100 meters (12.94), with Nguyen placing fifth (14.51). Carpenter ran to victories in the 800 meters (2:34.97) and in the 1500-meter race, as well, (5:19.80), with Showalter placing fourth, (5:55.84) and Heideman fifth (6:02.12).

In the women’s long jump, Nwokoma placed first at 18 feet, 9 inches; Phelps won again in the shot put (31 feet, 8.5 inches) and Jennings took second (30 feet, 6.5 inches), while Phelps secured the win in the discus (102 feet, 6.5 inches). Jennings won the javelin event with a throw of 122 feet, 4 inches, ahead of Manning in third place, at 100 feet, 10.5 inches, and Phelps placed second in the hammer throw at 97 feet, 11 inches.

For the men’s team, several Saints placed in the 100-meter dash, led by sophomore Isidore Payne-Williams who won the race, at 11.08. Freshman Anthony Nelson took third (11.70), Love finished fourth (11.83), and sophomore Nicolas Lucas finished sixth (12.08). In the 110 hurdles, Love brought home the win again (15.36), and Lucas placed third (17.55).

Other firsts were Lucas in the high jump, at 5 feet, 7 inches; Love in the long jump at 20 feet, 3 inches; Muller in the javelin at 149 feet, 9 inches; and Coppedge in both the shot put and the hammer throw, at 39 feet, 9 inches and 154 feet, 5 inches, respectively (followed by Muller in

third in the shot, at 34 feet, 11 inches, and in fourth in the hammer, at 102 feet, 8 inches). Coppedge also placed third in the discus, at 109 feet 11 inches.
